No. 5 gets new trim work

"Dave Martinez isn't an upholsterer, he is a fucking ARTIST!", said Roy Caruthers via text. My curiosity aroused I went to see for myself. And you know what? By God, Roy was right!!!

Lookee here:

The phenomenally talented Dave Martinez is another Hoosier boy who is getting national exposure for his high quality craftsmanship. Soon he will be pulling up stakes and moving to Long Beach, California.

Photobucket

Over one week he fashioned all new trim work for Roy Caruthers' '30 Model A on deuce rails. Upgrades included carpet, tuck and roll bench seat with wrap around back and sides, door panels with map pockets, kick panels with speaker covers fabbed from scratch, and trunk panels with a lighted vertical mail slot window for the low tech fuel gauge all in ox blood leather. These pics caught the half done lakes style tonneau cover. The driver's side will have a neat bump out for the steering wheel.

Long time readers of greasykulutre.com will remember Roy's 100ci Evo chopper. His No. 5 roadster continues to evolve setting the bar with race inspired slickness. Last year Roy hand built and dropped in a stroked and bored flattie with domed pistons and hi-comp heads. This years addition is trim work. Next year he plans have the entire front suspension nickel plated. Can't wait to see that.

A tip of the hat to Misters Caruthers and Martinez, well done sirs!

Nate's XS 650; The Wizard Sleeze

My friend Nate Spainhower is a multimedia star. Not only is he an ace custom bike painter whose work has been seen in some high profile mainstream bike rags, but he works at Anchor Recording Studio, is the drummer for Deathtrap and has appeared on a couple episodes of Biker Buildoff. He was also featured in Greasy Kulture Magazine issue #3 with his Model A Tudor. Nate very simply does not get enough recognition for his talents. But I'm working on that.

I recently shot his new bike, The Wizard Sleeze, a Yamaha XS 650 chop in a custom Ardcore rigid frame with a Sportster front end. I really dig the the overall vibe of the bike, especially the unique bars and foot pegs. The clear powdercoated frame playing off the Pagan Gold paint, minimal chrome and polished aluminum is killer diller. Look for an upcoming feature in GKM very soon.

We shot these pics at 38th and Illinois Streets in Indianapolis near The Melody Inn on a picturesque, lazy early Fall afternoon. Incidentally, there was a robbery and shooting in the same block less than a week later. Fun stuff.

Recent heavy rotation

Among others...

I am finally done!

It must have been about 5 or 6 years ago that I was looking at Chopper Dave's website. I noticed an old ad for Linkert Carburetors. I knew that Linkerts were the OEM carbs for old HD bikes but I never gave them much more thought. At the time I was busy with my newly purchased BSA and its Amals. What caught my eye about the ad was the address of the Linkert Factory.

Photobucket

It was right in the heart of Fountain Square, a neighborhood I knew well, on the south side of Indianapolis. The location corresponded to Bud's Supermarket. That small ad started a quest for more insight into how a couple square block area manufactured, refurbished or supplied hundreds of thousands of carburetors for Harley Davidson, Indian, Ford and who knows what else.

Linkert and Langenkamp and Wheeler-Shebler both had foundries cranking out pallets full of carburetors to be sent all around the world. Carburetor Exchange had a very sizeable operation employing close to 100 people as drivers and technicians. Without carburetion internal combustion engines are just a lump of cold metal. The corner of Sanders and Shelby in Fountain Square was an epicenter of carburetor manufacturing. Shamefully no historic marker exists, even in a city such as Indianapolis renowned for its 500 mile race and auto manufacturing history which at one time outpaced Detroit.

I pitched an idea to my friend Guy Bolton for a piece about the Linkert factory and its neighbors. Due to my procrastination it took me several months to pull it all together. But it is finally done and will be appearing in Greasy Kuluture #8. Look for it on your local newstand.
